The Uttar Pradesh Cooperative Tribunal is a quasi-judicial body constituted under the provisions of the U.P. Cooperative Societies Act, 1965. It provides an independent forum for the adjudication of appeals related to delivered by the Registrar and other arbitrators as prescribed in Sections 97 and 98 of the said Act. Its organizational setup is structured to ensure both judicial competence and administrative efficiency.

The Tribunal plays a vital role in safeguarding the rights of cooperative members, ensuring fair resolution of conflicts, and maintaining transparency in the cooperative sector. It functions as an appellate authority where decisions of the Registrar or other authorities can be challenged, thereby upholding the principles of justice and accountability in the cooperative framework of the State.

The decisions of the Tribunal are final as per the provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Cooperative Societies Act, 1965, and Rules 1968. The Tribunal acts as an appellate court for the purpose of first appeals as well as for revision petitions. A Writ Petition can be filed in the High Court if there is a question of law against the judgment of the Tribunal.

Structure of Tribunal: The Tribunal consists of three senior experienced persons from different fields such as judiciary, administration, and cooperation.
  • Chairman — Shall be a District Judge or retired District Judge, appointed by the State Government.
  • Two Members — One retired from the IAS Cadre and the second shall be a senior Class One Officer working or retired from the cadre of Provisional Cooperative Service.
  • In addition, the State Government has provided sufficient staff for running the Tribunal efficiently and judiciously.

The Chairman and Members of the Tribunal are appointed by the government under Section 96 of the U.P. Cooperative Societies Act, 1965. The Chairman has been announced as the head of the department by the State Government.

This is a statutory organization working under the administrative control of the Cooperation Department, Government of Uttar Pradesh.
